Specialist Advisory Group for Linguistics

The purpose of the Linguistics Specialist Group is to advise on the learning and teaching needs of their area, and on promoting and developing co-operation, innovation and good practices. They have particular regard for:

a) Content, design and organisation of the curriculum, and the methodology of teaching, learning and assessment, including the application of communication and information technology, open and distance learning, Web-based environments and self-access resources.

b) Learning resources, student support and guidance, including residence abroad, key skills, intercultural competence, resources management, diverse learning needs and student support.

c) Quality assurance, progression, achievement and certification, including benchmarking and staff development.

Convening the Group

The Chair of the Linguistics Group is Jeanine Treffers-Daller, who is responsible to the Director for establishing and maintaining the Group, as well as providing advice and recommendations on a programme of activities in the subject area. The Group is supported by Sarah Rule and Alison Dickens, Assistant Director (HE Programmes). We plan and oversee all activities designed to support those teaching in linguistics and support the recently formed University Council of General and Applied LInguistics (UCGAL) comprised of representatives of all Linguistics associations in the UK.

University Council of General and Applied Linguistics (UCGAL)

The learned societies and professional associations in descriptive, theoretical and applied linguistics have formalised their strategic collaboration in promoting their disciplines within UK higher education. The new University Council of General and Applied Linguistics (UCGAL) has grown out of an earlier informal collaborative forum dating back to 2005. The Council has recently undertaken a detailed analysis of the recent RAE results (available at www.philsoc.org.uk) and shown that, despite quantitative and qualitative evidence, UK research in linguistics has not been duly rewarded.

The Council in the near future will have its own Website and there will be a link from this Webpage to the UCGAL Website. The current Chair elected by the council is Ros Mitchell (Southampton).

Current group members are:

  • Ros Mitchell (Chair)
