Call for bids: projects 2010 - now closed
LLAS welcomes bids of up to £3,000 for pedagogic research or materials development projects in languages, linguistics and area studies. The remit of LLAS is to support teaching and learning of languages, linguistics and area studies in UK higher education. The call for bid proposals is now closed.

Description
These guidelines have been produced to help potential bidders decide whether or not their proposed project is likely to be considered. Proposals are welcome in any aspect of teaching and learning in languages, linguistics or area studies, but the following themes have been identified as priority areas.
- Language/area studies projects relating to specific languages/regions – we would particularly welcome bids from the following languages/area studies: Africa, the Americas, South East Asia (e.g. Indonesia, Malaysia etc), South Asia (e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan etc)
- Student experience in linguistics including employability
- Interdisciplinarity within LLAS subjects and with other disciplines (e.g. the linguistics of foreign languages, languages and area studies for business)
- The foreign language needs of Postgraduate graduates students in non-language disciplines (including linguistics and area studies where applicable)
- Teacher training in less widely taught languages
- British Sign Language
If you are unsure about the suitability of your proposed project, please contact John Canning. j.canning@soton.ac.uk
- All projects must relate to teaching and learning in languages, linguistics or area studies in UK higher education (though cross-sector, international or interdisciplinary projects involving LLAS subjects are welcomed)
- Projects must demonstrate wider benefit to an identifiable section of the LLAS higher education community (e.g. language tutors, American Studies lecturers etc)
- Projects must have an identifiable publicly available outcome (e.g. a report, materials), which will be made freely available on the LLAS website
Use of funds
Funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including buyout of teaching time, small equipment purchases (e.g. recording devices), and reasonable travel expenses.
We are unable to fund:
- Evaluation of courses, course materials or departments
- Student research for master’s degree, PhD etc
- Research not related to teaching and learning
- Projects with no identifiable benefits beyond the participating institution(s)
- Projects about languages, linguistics and area studies subjects entirely based in schools or other non-higher education providers
- The (re)publication of existing research or teaching materials
- Purchase of large items of equipment, e.g. computers
- Conference attendance or travel (except to disseminate a LLAS funded research project)
- Applicants not employed by UK higher education institutions
Bids will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Relevance to priority areas
- Quality of bid
- Wider benefits to the LLAS community
- Synergy / overlap with existing funded projects
- Value for money
Funding is subject to the approval of the applicant’s institution, and the signing of a contract.
Proposal form
To apply for funding, please use the attached form. Please submit to llas@soton.ac.uk by 30 November 2009. Successful applicants must submit a final report / materials to LLAS by 31 July 2010. These will be made freely available on the LLAS website.
