About LLAS Centre for languages, linguistics and area studies

LLAS has been providing high quality professional development, resources and information to the higher education sector since 2000. It was formerly part of the Higher Education Academy Network and continues to work in partnership with the HEA to support the UK higher education languages, linguistics and area studies community. The Centre’s activities also extend to working across sectors and internationally. It is led by Professor Mike Kelly and a team of experienced education developers with academic and pedagogic expertise in its subject areas.

Our mission is to foster world-class education in our subject areas. We do this by supporting our stakeholders in providing the best possible learning experience for students. We also engage in research and projects at the level of government policy and activities which promote greater public engagement with languages, linguistics and area studies. LLAS has a reputation for being responsive to the needs of its stakeholders and also offers academic leadership in promoting good practice and identifying emerging issues. We do this through:

  • An extensive programme of workshops, practice-sharing seminars and conferences
  • Online resources for teachers and students
  • Partnerships with associations and involvement in major initiatives at national and UK level
  • Research and information on pedagogical approaches and on language education policies
  • Networks facilitating co-operation and exchange between individuals and organisations

The Centre has a track record in leading major education projects at UK and EU levels. Recent projects have included developing a Quality Toolkit for languages (LanQua); developing an online space for sharing teaching resources (HumBox); community-based activity to promote and support language learning in informal or non-mainstream settings (Community Café/Language Café).

LLAS manages the highly successful Routes into Languages programme, which has developed a range of innovative and effective initiatives to promote language uptake in schools through collaborative partnerships between schools and universities in 10 consortia across England and Wales.

We offer professional development and information which will be of particular interest to:

  • Teachers, researchers and related staff in LLAS disciplines
  • Senior leaders in LLAS
  • HE departments and faculties
  • Policy makers, including funding councils
  • Subject associations in the UK and internationally
  • Teachers in sectors other than HE
  • Students (undergraduate and postgraduate)
