What is the Subject Centre?
- A publicly funded service, providing UK-wide support and services for higher education in Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies
- One of 24 Subject Centres which comprise the Subject Network of The Higher Education Academy
- Our mission is to foster world-class education in our subject areas. We do this by supporting our stakeholders and helping them to provide the best possible learning experience for students. LLAS is responsive to the needs of our stakeholders and also offers academic leadership in promoting good practice and identifying emerging issues.
Where are we based?
The Centre is hosted by the University of Southampton. Our partner organisation, CILT, the National Centre for Languages, houses the Higher Education Resources Collection. Contact details can be found on our contact us and where to find us pages.
Whom do we serve?
Academic and related staff who work in our subject areas in UK higher education. Our services may also be of value to:
- HE departments and faculties
- Policy makers, including funding councils
- Subject associations in the UK and internationally
- Teachers in sectors other than HE
- Students (undergraduate and postgraduate)
What is the Higher Education Academy?
- The Academy works with universities and colleges, discipline groups, individual staff and organisations to help them deliver the best possible learning experience for all students
- The Subject Network of the Higher Education Academy consists of 24 Subject Centres

How do we achieve our mission?
- by providing a resource base for information and exchange of ideas about what is happening in our subject areas
- by acting as a network for co-operation and exchange between individuals and organisations
- by spreading good practices and new ideas in teaching and learning
- by contributing to policy formation and stimulating leading edge developments
