![]() Here are the final 2 lines of that stanza from f.262r of MS BL Harley 4431. The verse-form is clear with the end rhyme of -gece on those 2 words at the end of each line sagece largece. The word for 'wisdom' or 'intelligence' changed its spelling throughout the 14th and 15th century. The spelling sagesce is recorded in 1370 whilst by 1477 the word appeared as saigesse. In Pizan, though, the spelling is usually sagece. Lexicometry uses concordancing software to highlight and count the various spellings for each word in a transcribed medieval text. This work helps show spelling changes over the years but also pinpoints variation between scribes in a single manuscript. Although the image is small please try to transcribe the two lines of verse. f7r tsvp |
