![]() A bar across the descender or tail of the small letter p was an abbreviation used by the scribe for speed or to save space in a long line of text. It is a difficult letter to show on modern computer screens within web pages. If we use the underline code in HTML (the <u> tag) we can display this symbol p, which is reasonably clear. The p was most often an abbreviation for par-, and sometimes per- as in perir = 'to perish'. In our image above it is an abbreviation for par-. The letters v and u are interchangeable in Middle French in the early 1400s so venir (to come) is often written uenir. The image has one word, what is it? f6r tsvp |
