Quire-signatures

Early fifteenth century manuscripts in Middle French most often used two columns of text per page.

For convenience in modern referencing the columns are lettered in-line with the folio number. For example on folio 1 recto the columns are coded 1a and 1b. Over the page on the verso side of the folio the lettering continues 1c and finally, 1d. Before starting again at 2a.
