This project was managed by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. The research was conducted by Hilary Footitt on behalf of UCML. The report maps national and regional trends in HE languages provision, examines institutional factors which promote and extend language learning in HE, and examines trends in the development of professional and vocational language routes in HE. It makes thirteen recommendations designed to stem the tide of languages decline in HE, widen participation in language study, and develop International Strategies in universities.
