Where vowels meet

Languages tend not to tolerate short vowels at the end of one word when the next word starts with a vowel. In Irish, de 'of' and do 'to, for' are shortened to d' before vowels. For example:
* d'Éamann 'to/for Eamann'
But other prepositions get round this difficulty by inserting a h in between. For example:
* le hÁine 'with Áine'
* go hArd Mhacha 'to Armagh'
